Walden Winter Carnival

HISTORY

FIRST WALDEN WINTER CARNIVAL

February 1973

We are proudly one of the longest running carnivals in Northern Ontario.

PRIOR TO 1973

There were many outdoor rink associations in the Walden area. Each outdoor rink association was hosting their own winter carnival every year. The Walden Community Centre (now known as T.M. Davies Community Centre) was just built and the Councillor for the area suggested that the outdoor rink associations amalgamate to host one “better” carnival at the new arena. Thus, Walden Winter Familyland was created.

DURING THE FIRST FEW YEARS

The carnival was only held on Saturday’s. The activities were mainly “games of chance” such as ring toss, penny toss and were held inside the ice rink area. Each year the committee strives to bring a variety of fun events. Throughout the years we have evolved and now host events over four days, at several venues which includes T.M. Davies Arena, St. James Elementary School, Anderson Farm and École St. Paul.

CHANGES DURING THE 80s

Sometime during the 1980s, the name carnival name was changed to the Walden Winter Carnival and our mascot Wally was introduced.

ABOUT THE CARNIVAL

The Walden Winter Carnival is a local event enjoyed by many generations of families. We are a non-profit event that relies solely on the generosity of sponsorship from local businesses and money received from carnival button sales.

The carnival is currently run by 10 committee members who organize and plan each and every event commencing in September of each year. We are currently looking for new committee members (even just a few hours would help), so if you’re interested see our section “Get Involved”

MERIT AWARD WINNERS

The Walden Winter Carnival presents a Merit Award every year to a business or individual with long standing sponsorship, commitment or volunteerism to the carnival.

CARNIVAL BUTTON WINNERS

The carnival button is chosen yearly by a button contest given to all of the schools in the Lively area including Copper Cliff and Whitefish. The children are given a button contest sheet. We ask that the children draw a picture of a certain theme.
